AI Changed Search. Here’s How to Adapt.
AI isn't changing the fundamentals of marketing. It's exposing them. Showing up with the right message, in the right places, often enough to be remembered has always been the goal. What's changing is where that showing up happens. And right now, a lot of it is happening before anyone clicks anything.
Google searches that used to send users to your website can now be answered on the spot: no click, no visit, no immediate chance to convert. But with the right paid media strategy, that same search still feeds a funnel designed to build brand engagement and produce qualified leads.
What is Zero-Click Search? And Why Does it Matter?
Zero-click search is exactly what it sounds like: someone types a question into Google and gets an answer on the results page, without ever clicking through to a website.
Thanks to Google's AI Overviews, AI-generated summaries now resolve questions that once required a website visit. When those summaries appear, click-through rates drop significantly.² In Google's AI Mode, 93% of searches end without a single outbound click.³
Here's the key thing to understand: demand hasn't gone away. People are still searching, still asking questions, still evaluating options. The difference is that the decision-making process is starting earlier and happening across more touchpoints than a single search ad can reach.
What a Lower Click-Through Rate Actually Means
A falling CTR is not a signal that paid search is broken. It's a signal that the audience has been filtered.
When AI has already answered a question on the results page, the person who still clicks your ad is choosing to go further. They want something the summary didn't give them. That click is more qualified than a click used to be, not less.
So where did everyone else go? They're still there, just earlier in the process. A search impression that doesn't convert right away isn't wasted. It's one touch in a longer sequence. The question is whether your strategy is built to capitalize on that journey, or whether it's expecting one ad to do all the work.
“Zero-click is changing the way marketers define success. Consumers are discovering brands and making decisions within the platforms where they spend their time, reducing the importance of clicks as the sole measure of performance,” said Jess Kennedy, director of media at ZLR Ignition. “Brands that invest in a diversified media mix are better positioned to meet audiences wherever they are.”
How the Funnel Works Now
Research shows that it takes roughly three exposures to a message before someone reliably acts on it: once to notice it, once to consider it, once to move.⁴
Today's buyer journey is non-linear. People don't discover a brand, visit a website and convert in a straight line. They encounter your brand across multiple channels, across multiple sessions, before search ever enters the picture. Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Awareness: Someone sees your brand for the first time through social media, video, display or other paid channels. They don't click. They don't need to yet.
- Consideration: They encounter your brand again in an AI Overview that references your content, a retargeting ad or a piece of content that answers their next question. Recognition is building.
- Conversion: They search, see your paid ad and click. They aren't meeting you for the first time. That click is a qualified one — a decision already in motion, not a cold introduction.
In this model, search is not the starting point. It's the checkpoint that confirms a decision already underway.
Building the Funnel
Steps to Strengthen Your Paid Media Strategy
- Don't pull spend from paid search. Build around it. Paid search is still the best tool for reaching someone at the exact moment they're ready to act. What it can't do alone is build the awareness that gets them there. Expand the strategy around it.
- Diversify your media mix. Pair search with display, social and video so prospects have already seen your brand before they search. By the time they click your ad, you're not a stranger.
- Make your content AI-citation-worthy. Named experts, specific data and clear sourcing help your brand earn a place inside AI Overviews. Brands cited in AI Overviews see 35% higher organic CTR and 91% higher paid CTR than brands that aren't.⁵
- Reset how you measure success. A campaign measured by last-click attribution alone will always look like it's failing in a zero-click world. Start tracking frequency, brand touchpoints, impressions share and funnel contribution to trace how a lead was built, not just where it converted.
- Tighten what happens after the click. If the clicks you're getting are more qualified than they used to be, your landing pages and follow-up need to match that intent. A high-quality click landing on a generic page is value left on the table.
How We're Helping Clients Adapt
The way people search has changed. The way paid media works has changed with it.
At ZLR Ignition, we help clients get in front of the right audiences earlier in the process, make sure their paid and content strategies are pulling in the same direction, and measure what’s moving the business rather than just what’s easy to count.
Zero-click search isn't the end for paid media search, but it is a reason to make your paid media work harder, across more channels and more of the journey.
